When in Mumbai
Cultural Currents

A city that never sleeps, in the true sense. One of the most densely populated cities in the world, Mumbai attracts thousands of people from all over India seeking to make it big one day.

The sheer pace of the city can be daunting to those who have never seen so much hustle in their lives before. From trains that carry millions to work each day, to the jam-packed roads that somehow manage to accommodate the city’s traffic, there’s a sense of urgency to everything.

It’s the resilience of its inhabitants, the entrepreneurial attitude and the will to overcome challenges big or small that make it such a unique place. Mumbai thrives on being multi-cultural, welcoming people of all religions and languages with open arms. The true spirit of Mumbai is most evident in its bustling suburban streets, rather than the shiny lobbies of five star hotels.

an interesting thing to do

Head to one of the oldest Parsi food places – located within the Fort area of Mumbai – such as Mumbai Britannia and Co, Ideal Corner, or try Jimmy Boy on a Saturday morning. If you happen to be in Colaba in the evening then a great place to eat kebabs is Bademiya – a large, bustling restaurant that originated from a humble street stall. The food experience in Mumbai is really something.

When in New York, why not get your own photo of an ‘it’ food. You’ll be spoilt for choice … maybe the cronuts at Dominque Ansel Bakery, the world-famous macaroons at Laudree, one of the decadent breakfasts at Jack’s Wife Freida, or the over-the-top bagels at Sadelle’s. The experience at Sadelle’s is quite something. After placing your order you’ll be presented with a tower of bagels on a pole complete with a three-tier tea tray, known as ‘The Tower’, laden with a range of delicious toppings including smoked salmon, capers, cream cheeses... And, in case you haven’t had enough carbs, you can finish off with one of the decadent pastries on offer. A true ‘eating for insta’ experience.

One local brand

Launched in 1949 (soon after independence), Aarey milk products’ brand Energee definitely qualifies as one of Mumbai’s most loved brands. Introduced as a means to encourage more people to drink milk and promote its health benefits, Energee became an instant hit throughout the city. Distributed via more than 1,800 booths all over Mumbai, the brand is connected to many people’s childhood memories. While it has sustained a lot of competition over the years, the brand has managed to survive by frequently launching interesting new flavours. Aarey’s Energee is close to the heart of all Mumbaikars.
